Week 1 in Geneva complete!

Okay, just over a week in and I'm already remiss in my blogging. Today was my official first day of work, which means that yesterday was my zero-th day of work (because I attended workshops despite it being prior to my official start date). This week is atypical for my office, because they're doing meetings/workshops at a hotel near the airport, rather than working in the ILO headquarters. These are part of their biennial meetings (every two years) where they review their policies and strategies and come up with new ideas to improve their work. I like this self-reflective aspect of the EVAL office, and based on my impressions from the last two days, I really like the people I'll be working with.

Early this morning, before I left for work, my mom left for the U.S. Her visit was so fun and helpful! I'm really glad that we had time to hang out together and to learn the transit system, to eat fantastic pastries, to go to the Botanic Gardens, to walk miles each day, and to get lots of last minute shopping done. Thanks to the time we spent exploring, I am a competent transit user (of course, the buses here make that pretty easy), I've been to quite a few of the neighborhoods in Geneva, I've met distant (and more importantly: warm, generous, lovely) family members, I've gotten a walking tour of the Old Town, and I have all the toiletries that I forgot to or was unable to pack.

One adventure that we went on last week was to look at wedding dresses. Since Jeff and I just got engaged but I'll be out of the U.S. until September, this was my only chance to look at dresses with my mom before then. We found a tiny shop in a fantastic shopping neighborhood (the first shop we went to charges $150 for an appointment, and if you buy a dress they'll deduct that fee from the cost of your dress; the shopkeeper referred us to a different shop that doesn't charge for appointments when we said that were not interested in paying for an appointment since this would be our first time looking). The woman at said shop was so great! She spoke no English, but she opened up early on a Saturday morning to accommodate our schedule, and she gave us great advice about how to shop for dresses. If you're ever dress shopping in Geneva (I know, highly likely), I recommend Royaume de la MariƩe.

That's all I have to say for the moment. I'll try to update more frequently now that I should be on a more regular schedule.
